Re: C&C sold......

Oct 3 was the first initial announcement for the 3600 that I saw here
Sun Fast 3600 | Jeanneau Owners Network Forum

As you can see, it also included a post plus a day or two from the designer, now in the water in early sept. so 11 months for this boat any how from announcement to in the water, dang near ready to sail......That includes the design being done, hull molds etc, make one...........

I didn't think that J-Boat was owned by Pearson Marine Group. It is true that Tilton Pearson (TPI) made a lot of the J-Boats, but they didn't make all of them.

I wonder who owns the Pearson brand now? TPI had acquired it last I heard, but wasn't planning on doing anything with it.

Re: C&C sold......

I heard that Everett Pearson bought his name back - that would put it in the mix with TPI wouldn't it?

Re: C&C sold......

Yeah, TPI owns/owned Pearson last I could find. It's not clear from this story and related ones if TPI is now part of US Watercraft, but it sounds like it might be.

Someday I'd like to get hull drawings for my Pearson 28-2, just to better understand the underwater shape. It's not anything unique, I just want to understand hull form better and I've sailed this boat in many different conditions.

Re: C&C sold......

There was no mention of TPI specifically, only that USW had purchased J-Boat in December along with the other manufacturers I mentioned earlier.
I have no idea what is going to happen with PMG.
They did mention that production at US Watercraft was to commence in the fall of this year. No word on availability.
The email was from Tartan, so they are not going to comment on anything other than Tartan related news.

Wow J-Boat, Aileron Express and C&C all under one roof, could be a real powerhouse if they do it right. If they build quality boats and stand behind them they should be a real good upper tier boat company. Perhaps they can bring C&C back to life again. Tartan never really did much good with the name.

Re: C&C sold......

It's been so long since C&C faultered (first April 11, 1985, then 1990, then 1995). I worked for C&C, sail regularly on one, they are great boats. Like Miatapaul says, "Tartan never really did much good with the name". Does the name (or Pearson, Morgan, Cal, etc.) really carry enough significance today to generate sufficient sales to cover the massive R&D, tooling & marketing costs to resurrect the name and turn a real profit? As much as the name is highly respected, very much so by the legion of happy owners (and wanna be) of boats dating back to the 60's (with a significant decline in new boat sales volume over the years), why bother? Does the name really generate sales?

All the names that brought boat design, construction, performance and winning hardware from 1960's to 1990's are just that, names from the past. They have great followers & great significance, and definitely a trail of failed models, changes in ownership, service and warranty dilemas.

So, why not a new brand?

USW owns the boat portions of TPI.

First they split the company into boats and not boats. Boats were named Pearson Marine:
Pearson Composites emerges from TPI split

Then US Watercraft bought those assets:
US Watercraft acquires three boat brands

US Watercraft doesn't own J-Boats, they just make licensed versions of them for the US Market. J-Boats doesn't make anything themselves.

It sounds like US Watercraft now owns Pearson, C&C, Alerion, True North, and maybe others. Hopefully they do some interesting work with these names.

I never heard of any significant level of failed models or service & warranty issues with C&C. Some, as is inevitable, but very little. The only true "failed" model I know of was the Mega and even that sold in the triple digits IIRC.

If you could buy say, the Aston Martin name to use for a sport car you were going to manufacture, would you? Or would you call it the Rugosa GT?

Actually, "Rugosa GT" has a nice ring to it. Better than Cizeta-Moroder or Iso Rivolta.
