Wood Boats (maintenance & performance)
Hi all,

I'm investigating two daysailers for next season. Trying to do my homework so I can get a decent price during the off season.

Saw a Bluenose 23 that looks gorgeous, it was renovated in 2008 ... and if the pics are recent, has held up well. I'm also looking at Pearson Ensigns, which have about 1,000 lbs more in displacement and a larger cockpit. But the Bluenose oozes beauty and is a real head/heart turner.

For the Bluenose my questions are:
  • maintenance - as a wood boat will it require a lot of time & $'s to maintain?
  • with a somewhat light displacement of about 2,000 lbs will it be too tender for my wife?
  • at 6' will boom clearance be sufficient for me so I don't have to continually duck the boom?
  • Can I use a small spinnaker if desired?

Probably hard to go wrong with either choice.

Appreciate your thoughts.

Re: Wood Boats (maintenance & performance)

Both denise & Z both grew up around wooden boats - and know of what they speak.

I agree that the Bluenose is pretty drop dead gorgeous but I wouldn't buy it because of the wood hull either.
Trust me. There will be plenty to do on an old plastic classic too; more than you can imagine.
Unless your wife is a real trooper I'd go for the Typhoon or an Ensign.

When we built aluminum spars at F & N Yacht Services in Toronto in the 70's for fiberglass Bluenose and Minuet we fitted some Bluenose for spinnaker. Limited info at

Buy the woodie!

You know you want to.

(I should talk, I had one that was mostly painted and still didn't keep up as it deserved)

Brutal honesty is a good thing, thanks for the advice.

Leaning heavily towards finding an Ensign in decent shap, just too many questions about the Bluenose.

Re: Wood Boats (maintenance & performance)
At least give us a pic or two on the Bluenose?

It honestly wasn't/shouldn't have been bad on mine, but it did need regular paint and varnish, and I mostly sailed rather than worked on it :-) if it had been really close to home rather than an hour away it might have been a different story. I did enjoy working on it, and my kids loved it (way more character than the glass replacement)

used to be maintained in catskill, ny--now is under restoration for 111 bday--commissioned in 1903-- eleanor. was actively sailed yearly from 1903 until 1995, many times solo by the owner who bought used in 1952, for either 50 bux or free...(per family rumor)
sleek, fast, fun to sail--gaff rigged.

defect in port bow was caused by a power boat at speed crashing into it--temporary patch done by owner while under way. owner wearing funny well earned via merchant marine academy and history of working hat--was a true captain---and looking very irish

After 40 odd years of sailing a woodie ,I still don't hanker for plastic. See my woodie at Thane Sailpast-You tube.
