Tanzer 7.5 vs Catalina 25

Looking for opinions on a 1982 Catalina 25 tall rig vs 1981 Tanzer 7.5 with shoal keel. This is my first boat and will be used in Lake Ontario around the Toronto area. There are some for sale including winter storage for around the same price of $5000.What to look for and any concerns when looking at either of these would be appreciated. Is a survey still recommended for boats of this age and price.

Re: Tanzer 7.5 vs Catalina 25

I'm no expert and still searching for a boat, but after looking at a 1/2 dozen in the last 30 days I think it's easy to see something that was loved and something that was just used.

Sails, sheets/lines and general hardware on some boats appear new and quite serviceable and on others they are trashed. Just changing out lines on the boat could be an expensive proposition and never mind sails.

It sounds like they are out of the water and that's a good thing it'll make a basic hull inspection quite easy. If this is the case I would spring for the survey when you get a finalist since you will not have haul out costs.

One reason I've decided to stay with the Catalina's is just the sheer number of second hand parts that are floating around and the support from Catalina Direct.

Good Luck-

Re: Tanzer 7.5 vs Catalina 25

Go for the Tanzer. My first keelboat was a T7.5. It's easy to sail, has a very basic rig, handles well in both light airs and heavier water, and has a fairly comfortable accommodations. Since Tanzers were built in Ontario, there are lots of other 7.5s around.
