Rethana 27
I am looking for a boat this size for some day sailing and maybe some longer trips along the East coast of Florida.

I came across this boat for a great price and was wondering if anyone knew anything about the model. I did some research but all I could find out was that the boat was German made and not too many of them were produced.

The boat floats and comes with sails but is in need of some TLC and a lot of cleaning. The floorboards need to be replaced. The cushions need to be replaced. Some rigging needs to be replaced. The hull and deck are in good shape though. There is mold on the inside bulkheads and inner hull. Is this a symptom of a bigger problem like hull leaks?

Also the boat is fitted for a single cylinder inboard (has a shaft and prop) but doesn't have one in it. How much is this going to cost me to purchase and install? I think somewhere between 1,500 and 3,000, is that about right?

The boat has a centerboard that can be raised up and lowered. I've never seen this in a 27 footer. Is this going to decrease the strength of the keel?

The boat floats and only costs $650.00. but with all the above problems is this boat going to be more of a restoration problem that a novice like me can handle?

Interesting looking boat...

Looks like trailerable centerboard boat, but you won't find a lot of info (though quite a few images come up on a google search.

If you want to repower with an inboard count on $6-8K if you have the work done, could easily be more than that if significant mods are required to make a newer engine fit. Add to that a probable prop change due to different gear ratios.... Sadly most boats in that state end up with outboards bolted to the transom..

Nothing wrong with a centerboarder at 27 ft, I have one at 44 ft.

But as others say to much work needed. Even if free it might be too much.

In fact if this one it is something to avoid as he has done a DIY delamination blister repair which might be failing already. An expert is needed!

There are a LOT of bargains around in Florida.

Something like this 24ft bristol sailboat diesel

Inboards are expensive to install. We were quoted $15k for a new Beta 15 in our 27ft boat, with $8k for the motor and the rest in labor. If we went with the original YSM8, it would have cost us roughly $1000 for the motor and still probably $4k-$5k to install.

Is that keel weeping rust?

Re: Rethana 27
Even from those pictures it looks like there are structural stress cracks along the jib tracks and at other points on the boat. I couldn't find any info on the boat, but I would guess it is a cored deck, which means you may also be looking at a huge recording problem. Frankly I wouldn't touch this boat if you paid me without a full survey and a quote from a reputable boat yard to repair the damage.
