IF Folkboat help!!

OK here is my situation, I''m trying to track down a 1980''s or newer Marieholms Bruk sailing boat. I''ve spent hours on the net trying to locate a builder but can''t seem to find any. I''ve also looked on the European websites to no avail. Its frustrating to find no current builders of this beautiful boat. I live on the west coast of Canada and would even consider sailing the bugger across from Europe. Please.. if you have any information on a current manufacturer of a current Marieholms Bruk in good condition can you post it here? and yes I''ve looked at ALL the sailboat classified pages I can find.

The resources available to you are bountiful. In addition to U.S., Canadian and UK folkboat associations, there are multiple Scandinavian associations at your fingertips, all at http://www.folkboat.com It may not put you smack dab in front of the builder you seek, but there''s more than enough there to get you started.

Don''t overlook the following:
1. Your boat of interest belongs to a very narrow (but over in the Baltic, very very deep) niche. ''Researching'' may mean in your case picking up the phone and talking, digging for referrals, phoning and talking some more.
2. These boats seem to change hands informally moreso than via commercial brokers, and I suspect that''s true when trying to learn about builders as well as available boats. You may well need to connect with multiple informal networks before you even know who''s "thinking" of selling their boat or who''s taking orders.
3. While the bulk of the Folkboat fleet are going to be in N Europe, there are few nations there that haven''t educated two generations of their populations in English by now. If it''s a Dane, Swede, Norwegian or Finnish sailor (I was surprised to find this is less true of German sailors), they''ll most likely be able to talk at length about their boats, their friends boats, boats for sale ad nauseum in English.

When we were at the British Kiel YC on the S boundary of the Baltic last June, we were told to enjoy the arrival of some ''classic wooden boats'', one of the many events the BKYC hosts each year. We went to town to do some grocery shopping, then went for a walk, and came back to find there''d been an invasion! The YC has perhaps 30 slips, almost all of which were full...but we found 200 wooden boats berthed when we returned, and more arriving by the minute. And there were some very, very pretty Folksboats in that crowd.

You may have trouble finding a post 1980 Marieholms IF Boat. I believe they ceased production in 1984 after about fifteen years of production. I expect the majority were built during the 1970’s. There is one listed in Yachtworld for just under $15,000 (Cdn.) and located in Virginia. Judging from the photos, it appears in reasonable shape. The link is:

Below are several more links containing useful information and contacts. Note the messageboard because, as Jack said, many of these boats appear to change ownership informally. The following quote came from the IF boat website noted below:

“Of the Swedish made boats about 2225 are sold in Sweden. The rest have been sold abroad, mainly Germany (390), Denmark (325), Norway (135), USA (125), Switzerland (120), and Australia (100). The only Folkboat currently in production is the Nordic Folkboat. It is made in Holland and sells for around $45,000. If you are flexible in terms of age (remember, fiberglass boats never die; they simply wait for better owners), I have a 1976 Marieholms International Folkboat for sale. It is in superb condition with a recently overhauled inboard Volvo Penta. By the way, Marieholm Bruk is now located in Holland as well. They make the Marieholm 33Class yacht.

I believe that J J Taylor built folkboats and Contessa 26''s (a folkboat hull with a masthead rig)in Canada well into the late 1980''s but in a smaller volume than Marieholm. There were a large number of companies that built variants of the Folkboat. Henry Walton produced a Walton 25 in Canada that was a 1960-1970''s era Folkboat variant with a small doghouse cabin. Cheoy Lee produced the Frisco Flyer which was also a more cruising oriented version of the Folkboat.

In the early 1970''s. I owned and restored a 1949 lapstrake Folkboat built in Sweden. I really loved that boat. For its day it was fast, easy to handle, manuevered well and balanced well.

In fairness, I will say that the Folkboat''s day was sometime in the 1940''s and 50''s. I don''t know why you are so focused on the Folkboat and whether you have ever sailed one, but by any objective standard they are slow, wet, tender, and develop a fair amount of weather helm in a strong breeze, with an extremely cramped interior. The glass boats tried to put way too much stuff (bigger water tanks, heavier more complicated interior, and in many cases an inboard engine) on these very small boats and so the glass boats are 25% heavier, have less ballast, carrying capacity, and less stability. While these boats have an enviable offshore track record, be aware that the glass versions fail to meet the CE criteria to obtain an open ocean certificate based on stability, cockpit drainage, and downflooding issues.
