Scampi

I am a novice keel boat sailor. Would a Scampi 30 be good starter boat for me on Lake Ontario?

I don''t know why not if it is a boat you have access to. I have friends that toured the lake with a smaller boat and carried a family. You could get less and still be fine or more and be better. In the end the price you pay should match the budget or you run aground with your cash.

Having grown up on Lake Ontario I would say the skipper counts as much as the boat. It can appear tame and turn ugly exceptionally fast. I''ve seen 40+ knot winds with 25 ft breakers on the east shore. The thunderstorms can become quite trecherous.

yes

I grew up racng on a Scampi 30 on Lake Erie and never ever felt unsafe. A very solid boat - short mast, hard chine. Can have a narrow slot making her a bit tricky to get every knot out of her and double spreader rig requires some extra time tuning but a great boat for the great lakes.
