Jeff,
i do not believe that the motor on my furling system is a mercedes starter motor.
this motor has external removable brush caps, and would not be suitable for a car.
if you could find the post you were referring to i would appreciate it.
i cant find it.
Fair winds,
\eric

Sasha, Eric is very happy with his Amel and is always very positive in his comments, which are based on experience...but of course it''s only his experience. Just to offer perspective, STELLA (an Amel 46 that is immaculately kept by its Scottish owners) pulled into the factory docks in 2005 to have various projects attacked before they took off on the Blue Water Rally. One project was a frozen motor on their mainsail furling system. The mechanic''s comment was something in French to the effect ''Oh, this again...'' which the French speaking Scottish captain was a little disappointed to hear.

This does not mean the system is poorly engineered but it does illustrate - yet again - that on boats which are more complex (and that certainly includes motors), there is the potential for additional problems.

ummm...How did I end up in this?

Amel maybe good, amel maybe bad, don''t know, never been on one, never asked whichever question you are answering.

I do have my own share of seized electric motor stories from the workshop though!

Sasha

whoosh,
the 46 footer has to be about 17 or more years old.
the only problem that i have heard of is that the gearbox on the motor shaft gets froxen due to a lack of grease. about every 5 years the gearbox needs maintenance.
since 2002 of the 378 owners on the amel users website
i have not heard one owner complain of furling motor problems or a furling problem
.Fair winds,
eric
