When buying a boat how can you be sure it is free and clear of having a lean against it?

Boat liens (not leans) will be researched by your money lender, prior to financing. If you are paying cash and wish to do your own search, I suppose a query with the registration office of the boat''s home port and/or the bureau of USCG Documentation could provide information to that regard.
