The 1980 Hughes Northstar 35 was an S&S designed in the mid 1970's, during the IOR era. I owned a smalller, slightly earlier Hughes Northstar. I thought that the build quality and design details, which included a fair amount of custom hardware, was quite well done. Unfortunately the hull and rig design fell victum of the excesses of boats optimized for the early IOR racing rule. The pinched stern, bustle, and rig proportion, make these not the easiest boat to handle shorthanded, less than ideal boats for offshore use and low on performance as compared to more moderate designs.
