Interested in Buying a Nautical Development 56

Does anyone have experience owning or sailing a Nautical Development 56 Ketch. I am interested in buying one to cruise the Carribean. The sailboats were only built for a few years in Florida approximately 1979-1984.

I'm at the same point and the Nautical Development 56' Ketch looks like a great boat. I've been looking at Irwin 52's as well. Any info you can share or if you decided and went ahead?

A good buddy had an ND60 and it was built like a tank and had all kinds of room. Systems were in BAD shape...needed new tankage, engine and electrical wiring and plumbing...but he had a nice boat when done. Sailed well in heavy weather and could take anything. VERY modest performance in lighter winds.

It is a WHOLE different class of boat than an I52 in terms of robustness of build quality but the I52 will do better under sail in normal weather. Not so well in heavy stuff.

Thanks for the quick response arf145 and camaraderie... it was my first post!

Do I read your comments as:
ND56 = much better robustness and build, poorer light air performance, better in heavy weather
I52 = poorer build, better light air performance, not as good in heavy weather

I think old boats are old boats.... all systems need checking/replacement/repair to some extent, so I'm being realistic I think (and have owned a 20yo Duncanson 37 before).

Yes Gantag...you read me right. BTW...check the mast height on the Irwin. The ND56 Ketch rig will let you under the ICW bridges if that is a concern.
If you go with an I52...the MKII is a better boat.

I was a crew member or "extra help" taking a ND56 from Texas all the way to Virginia. My 1st time doing this sort of thing so forgive me if my terminology is off. It was around May of 2006 & what stormy winds and waters she took us through! I always felt very safe, she was a big strong floating protector. She took us so far out, to sail among the stars, dolphins, sea birds and oil rigs. We averaged about 6-8 knots most all of the time (even at night), which I thought was fairly speedy. I have visited her a few times since and I'll be with her again soon, to head to Ft. Lauderdale where she will be put up for sale. She is strong and reliable, I hope she finds a good home.
