Documentation Agent

I'm in the process of buying a sailboat and the broker is recommending hiring a documentation agent. I've researched on the internet and called the company that he recommended and I can't decide if this is worth hiring out for or I'd be paying someone to do something that I could do for free. Anyone familiar with this service?

Thanks,

Re: Documentation Agent

not familiar with the service but I would recommend against it. They're just going to file the paperwork you would anyway to the Coast Guard and then charge you more for it.

Just follow the instructions on the USCG website on what you need (paperwork, fees etc.) and you should be good.

And deal with Florida registration, sales tax, property tax, etc.

Re: Documentation Agent

Use an agent if there I some complex problem...or better an attorney. But there shouldn't be. The Doc people are easy to work with. Is there an existing proper registration? Should be straightforward. Order the doc history first.

Re: Documentation Agent

There is an existing registration. It is currently registered in Florida, where I'll register it as well.

Re: Documentation Agent

This is a somewhat different issue then the OP presented, but perhaps a documentation agent might be helpful...
I bought an old boat last year--previously documented--the plaque is still attached and the boat shows up on the documented vessels website--but the documentation "lapsed" and the boat has apparently had several owners since then. I've got a clean title, but no record of title history. I considered getting the documentation renewed, but in the absence of having a record of the unbroken title history that seemed like a tough chore. This seems like the type of task that a documentation agent might be useful for.

Thoughts?

Following the link provided by Rhapsody's above, it looks like you should be able to follow the Simplified Method and just provide copies of the current title/registration and an original or copy of the bill of sale....shouldn't matter how many previous owners there are between you and the previous CG documentation owner.
