cockpit length

We are moving up from a 17 ft Boston Whaler sailboat to a 24 to 28 foot day sailer. The most important feature to us is a long cockpit since we do not plan to spend much time in the cabin. I know racing boats have the longest cockpits but we are just day sailors. Can anyone tell me where I can get a hold of cockpit lengths for used boats from the 70's and 80's. Thanks, Bob

You should check out the Pearson Commander. It's a little older than what you're looking for but it has classic lines that can't be beat.

Here are a couple of cockpit shots I pilfered off of the Pearson Ariel site:

sailingfool will become famous soon enough
You will find it hard to match the excellent cockpit of the Whaler, which certainly is an unusually comfortable daysailer!

I've never seen cockpit lengths published anywhere. I do well remember some wonderful afternoons stretched out full length on the seats of mid-70s Cal 25 and also a 27. Part of the "length" may come from NOT having a wheel and a T-shaped cockpit. So I'd suggest checking out the 70's Cal 25, 27, and 29 - they will also provide some of the spritely performance you have enjoyed with the Whaler.

Good luck.

I would look towards boats that are marketed as daysailers, racers, or racer/cruisers rather than cruiser/racers or pure cruising boats. The racer/cruisers and daysailers generally have larger cockpits, and a smaller cabin.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
