I think Valients are made close to Dallas, TX with only a small lake for company.

More Than a Plate

Sailingdog,

I concur that "simply using larger backing plates" would not seem a fix for flagrant under-engineering. However, the Bavaria fix involved much more than larger backing plates. See http://www.bavariayachtbau.de/typo3/index.php?id=66 for the actual fix. Unfortunately the engineering is in German, but in the pictures you can see that the "fix" included epoxying numerous layers of fiberglas mat that in effect DOUBLED the thickness of the as-constructed hull section. The thread http://boatdesign.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7362 has an year-log discussion of the problem and repair - give it read and see if "flagrant" still seems too strong a term.

Enjoy.

Sailingfool-

Given the links you've posted, I would agree that the Bavaria Match 38/42s are pretty badly under-engineered. The articles I had read did not go into great detail about what the actual repair was, and most had described it as larger backing plates, which did not seem to be a major re-fit to me. What is described in the pictures in the first link above is definitely more than just larger backing plates.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Jerry,

Lake Texoma (where Valiants are built) is an 89,000 acre pond with a max depth of 120 ft, and over 580 miles of shoreline... there are over 2500 (1500 covered) slips on the lake. The aquifer is over 39,000 square miles. Its not one of the Great lakes, but its the best we got certainly not "small"

Not to mention they are a Mr. Perry design.

Although not a speed boat, it is well constructed for single/short handed sailing and very well constructed. You might find a 37 or a 34 available in your price range. Not super fast, but respectable...built for off shore single handing. also rigged as an optional cutter, would be easier to handle for thoseoff shore trips. Good reputation for quality construction as well.
