Best book for self surveying?

Ahoy Ya'll!

Just wondering if anyone has any book suggestions for a self-survey book of sorts for someone who is looking to buy their first sailboat and is on a budget so hiring a surveyor might be out of the cards.

Cheers!

I don't know of a published book specifically for that but this might help:

Re: Best book for self surveying?

Reading Don Casey's books would be a good place to start. Posting here iwhenyou come across something specific might help.

Did you get a chance to read this thread? Boat Inspection Trip Tips

Depending on your budget, you might find a surveyor willing to help at an hourly rate, without a complete survey. I've lived through 3.5 surveys and much of the time is spent looking for major defects that, 99+% of the time don't exist (but if you are financing or spending more than a few thousand you NEED to be sure of what you are getting into). The rest of the time is spent testing systems and writing notes. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for surveys, the .5 survey saved me from buying a disaster that I had my heart set on.

Just keep in mind there is a price point that exists whereas having a survey done may pay for itself, in entirety or partially, if an issue is found that must be addressed before the boat is purchased. A survey could also negate the sale entirely, saving you thousands.

There may also be people here who would be willing to help out a new sailor if they are near you.

Re: Best book for self surveying?

Don Casey wrote a book. " Inspecting an aging sailboat".

There is also a book that combines that one and many others into one. It's good to have if you own a boat or are lookng to buy one and plan on doing your own work on the boat.

Out of print nowadays, but the Jim Jessie book, "Be your own surveyor, almost" is very good.

This book has them both and then some. Funny story is I just pulled this book out and was carrying with me today on vacation for some light free reading.
