Used racer/cruisers in US with Fin keel/spade rudder and tiller?

Hey folks,

Does anyone know of a coastal cruiser in the 30-34ft. range that has a tiller, fin keel/spade rudder and is available in the US used market?

I used to teach in South Africa on a fleet of Lavranos 34s that I thought were amazing. They came with a raw-water cooled 2 cylinder Yanamar that you could hand-crank to start, were bullet-proof and could turn on a dime in tight quarters under power. I made at least four trips from Cape Town to Durban on one of those boats and they were awesome. Perhaps a similar such boat exists in the US?

My last boat was a 1969 Elizabethan 31. A fine full-keel, shallow draft (4.5ft.) English boat. It had a tiller, but there was a lot of pressure on the helm as the rudder was unbalanced (transom-hung).

I used to dream about boats that could go around the world. Now I dream of a small coastal cruiser that will fit under bridges on the ICW, has shallow draft that allows anchoring in isolated shallow spots, maneuvers well under power and must have a tiller. I can't stand a wheel on a small boat.

I almost bought a J30 instead of the Elizabethan, but I was living aboard in the BVI, so the J-boat was a little too spartan. Oh, but how I wanted to sail it!

I'd like the price to be <$30,000.

I'd appreciate any boat suggestions.

Thanks all!

Michael.

Tiller vs Wheel was often an option, so it's a bit of a crapshoot as to what you find on any particular model. The various Beneteau First series tended to come with tillers, and the First 32s and 34/35s from the 80s might fit the bill. Many Jboats will also qualify.

But really, there should be no shortage of boats that fit that description. Here's a small sample.

Silly me. I didn't realize I could search Yachtworld with keyword "tiller." Thanks. One of those was a Pearson 10m. I looked at one in the USVI a few years ago. Nice boat. I had forgotten.

YOu may also find some Jeanneau models from the 80s that were on the racer cruiser side too, that fit you budget. I personally would stay away from boats older than 81 or 82 or there abouts from the design standpoint. Due to the IOR style hull shape....that is me.

You may find a DuFour, X-Yacht, beneteau, Oday sold some Jeanneau marked Oday, Dehler that may fit your needs too.

Lots of racing oriented boats in the 30 foot range will have tillers. J-30, J-29, Cal 9.2, Pearson Flyer, Olson 30, etc. etc. Once you get above 30 feet, the options narrow signficantly.
