racer/cruiser?

i'm looking for a capable racer/cruiser. in the 30' - 36' range. speed and the ability to make a true offshore passage is the idea. toss in your $0.02's. interior lay-out isn't much of an issue. a usable head and diesel engine is ideal. I am a singlehander so simple is better. I've looked at J/105's any other ideas out there?

Ocean-crossing

Practical Sailor suggests that J/35's would be one of the few production boats they'd take transatlantic. The J/105 lacks freeboard, IMHO, and has a larger cockpit than might be advisable. Though it might be easier to handle on nice days, we hit three storms going transatlantic, and parts of 20' waves managed to fill the cockpit on the 0hlson 38 we were on more than once.
