Hi guys, can anyone provide information on a Doug Peterson designed sail boat. We are looking at a 1983, CC, 46'' Kelly Peterson Cutter. It is well equiped for crusing and appears to be well maintained. Any information would be of a great help. Thanks, Howard & Trish

Doug designed this boat some time before he became recognized as a designer. While not as spacous as some other CC''s, it is quite comfortable. It sails like a dream in light & heavy weather. You won''t go wrong with it. The 1 negative I can think of is it''s draft. Parts of Caribbean can be interesting with 6+ ft. draft--but many have/are doing it! Smooth seas & Quiet anchorages from the OUI SI crew.

One minor correction, Doug Peterson is probably one of the few designers who was instantaneously ''recognized as a designer'' after designing his first boat. Doug Peterson''s first design was ''Ginbare''. She was constructed and became an instant success. Like Olin Stephen''s with Dorade, there was no point (except for their first boat) in their careers where either man designed a boat before they were well known.

That said the Peterson 44''s are highly regarded and have sailed a lot of blue water miles. I understand that some of the early ones, like many Taiwan constructed boats, had black iron fuel tanks and these can be a real problem as the boat ages.

There is also some question about who designed the 46. As I understand it the 44''s were actually designed by Doug Peterson. The yard that was building the 44''s for Kelly had a set of the drawings for the and stretched the stations apart to produce the tooling for the 46. Depending on whose version you choose to believe, there was no additional design or engineering work performed to adjust the structural requirements or weight distribution characteristics to the new longer length.

Jeff
