Freight, Options and Commissioning

When comparing new boats for purchase, all prices are quoted "plus freight, options and commissioning". While freight and options are pretty straight forward, my question is about commissioning.

What exactly is included??? Does it depend on the brand of boat, the particular dealer, or both???? How much should it cost for a midsize boat (30-36 ft)???

Commissioning is a pretty vaguely used term but it generally means removing all packing, cleaning the boat up, stepping and tuning the rig, getting all systems up and running and testing, installing safety equipment and turning the boat over clean and ready to be used. It may also include a bottom job.

There does not seem to be an industry wide agreement as to the included services and the cost.

"Options" is a tricky one that can get expensive. Sometimes there is included equipment with a new boat, but it is generally not installed. So the "options & commissioning" general includes installation expenses for any add-on hardware (electronics, etc.).
