The Alberg 30 would fit that requirement, and is very common on the Chesapeake... has a good owners association, and is a pretty decent boat. Not as fast as some others...but very capable, and relatively liveable... and quite affordable.

Catalina 36. Perfect for that. And if you want to take it further away one day or island hop, it is AWESOME for that. You can live aboard it too. It will fit your price range and is a comfortable boat. The MKII is the better of the two, but a late model MKI will be fine too.

Dark side or not, my boat's flanked by two late model Catalina 36s which sure seem like a lot of boat for the money. They're also thoughtfully designed for coastal cruisers and my dockmates are the nicest people you could ever meet.

Plastic fantastic lightweights for sure, but one thing I do envy about them, is the virtual soap and water maintenance requirement. Just hose them off and raise the cocktail flag.

WELCOME ABOARD!!!! COME ON OVER TO WHAT OTHERS CALL THE LIGHT (Don't listen to that damned ole SD, he will come over soon too). It is never to late to trade in the Nauticat. Would you like me to reccomend a broker, or you want to just buy new? (smile)

PS THis whole sight will own Catalinas bfore it is all done. I have heard Cam is about to trade up (not down) to one and Giu is secretly looking. I am certain that T-34's is a Catalina... he is just in denial.

I don't know if that's actually the case, my multi points pretty well...and even it it has to be a bit further off the wind, chances are likely that it makes up for it in DMG overall, being a faster boat to begin with.
