"Baltic/Swan" style companionway''''s - good, bad?

Hello

I would like to hear from anyone who has sailed on or had a boat with a "Baltic/Swan" type of companionway - essentially a larger hatch on the cabin roof that you step up from the cockpit to get to. How did you find using it - inconvenient, undesireable, deal killer, non problem, liked it?
