Cutlass Bearing needs to be replaced on a boat Im looking at

hi,

A boat im looking at has play in the prop shaft. I think the cutlass bearing needs to be replaced. I am a pretty handy person. Is this something I can repair myself? Have any of you done the replacement of the cutlass bearing yourselves? Have any of you used Strut Pro to do it? How hard was it for you to replace the bearing in whichever method you chose? Also what do you think a marina would charge to do that repair? Thanks in advance!

I have done it myself and it is not as easy as you would think it could be or should be. The hardest part of the entire job is getting it out without doing any damage. If you do it slowly and not rush the job; you will get good results. You can use a nut, bolt and washer if you can't get or rent the puller.

From talking to my yard mechanic he says he often has to split the bearing with a saw or screw driver to get it out as they are usually really stuck. I imagine this is something you would do slowly as to not to deform or damage the housing. There are typically set screws on the side which will probably be fused as well. I think it is doable but just block out enough time, have the right tools and use lots of penetrating oil.
