Buying a Pearson 27 1987

I'm putting a bid on a 1987 Pearson 27 Sloop tomorrow. And, I not quite sure what to offer. The boat will be my first boat and is in execellent condition. It has a 12H.P. Universal Diesel, 350 hours. Asking price is $21,000.. I don't know where to start my offers, as everything I've seen on line ranged from $16,500 to $21,000. If anyone could help I would really appreciate it.

Izz -- I owned a 1989 P-27 hull #198 for 14 years. It's a great boat that can take more than you can. You'll enjoy her.

As for price, always start lower than you think the boat is worth and let the owner react. You can always go up but it's harder to come down without a survey showing problems of course. Don't be afraid of insulting the owner. When I sold mine I was never put off by what someone offered me. I eventually sold the boat for what I wanted out of her. But do make the offer subject to survey and then use that as a bargaining tool. The surveyor will give you a fair market price for the boat as well.

If the sale goes through, let me know and I can hook you up with a P-27 email list that has about 70 owners on it. A great resource.

Update -- Izz, I just sent you a private message on how to join the email list. Why not join now and ask the list? You might get some input from them before you put the offer in.

Put in an offer for $16000... the worst they can do is say no. If they counter, you know they are at least willing to move on price. Make sure you make the deal subject to sea trial and survey.

Izz,
Our P27 was listed for 21K and we offered 16K. He returned with 17K. We came back with 16,500 contingent on marine survey and sea trial. After survey and seatrial we further negotiated to 15K for the final price. Survey appraised at 21K. It had just been given a fresh barrier coat (not cheap at 25-30 per foot) as well as fresh antifoul coat. The boat was in excellent condition but needed some engine work like new water pump, zincs, filters, oil change, etc. We put another 5K into her so far for items like insurance, a new furler and head stay 1,250... new running rigging, new anchor, steam, deck lighting... new GPS... and several other smaller things that added up QUICK. All in all we are extremely happy with how it all turned out. We closed about a month ago so this was a recent transaction. SailorMitch is right about the P27 list... very nice and helpfull people there. Feel free to PM me with any questions.
