Islander 36'

There seem to be quite a few of these offered on the west coast.....reasonably priced.
Does anyone have experience with these boats and information on the build quality? It would be used for daysailing in the Pacific Northwest

Thanks for any input

Too bad you did not post this question last week, there was an puget sound islander roundezvous in Port Ludlow last weekend with 20 owners of different Islanders. Altho per a firend of mine, whom was teh host, there were no I36's their. It's been held at PL on the third weekend in June for about 3-4 yrs IIRC. I did not ask if i twill be held there next yr.

Otherwise, most folks I know with them like them, well suited for Pugetsound, NW US use thru the san juans etc.

We had an Islander 28 that we loved and I have been aboard a couple of Islander 36's. I think they are very pretty boats. If you look at the participants of the Baha-haha each year, you'll see several Islander 36's have made the trip. They're a popular boat here in Puget Sound.

Cheers for the reply Marty -

It seems like they may be similar to the Catalina in build quality - maybe not built very strongly...... I hope someone will chime in.

One of the ones listed has quite severe osmosis....and another was advertised as "never having a blister" leading me to believe rightly or wrongly that there may be more of a problem with blistering on this boat than others....

GB...I don't think there are any more blister problems with Islanders than with most other boats of that era. This means that blisters ARE an issue for many boats of that era but by now most boats that are gonna get them ...have taken care of the problem or have been out of the water enough so that they haven't been a problem. If you buy ANY boat of this era that does NOT have blisters and you plan on keeping it in the water year round...you should plan on doing an epoxy bottom coat before you paint the bottom.
I think the build quality is medium and the boats are quite nice and a good choice for your plans. Good luck!

If one talks to Doug, ie the friend with an islander peterson 40, the Islanders are a bit better build than catalina. The reality is, they are probably a step up by one or two. Islander site

As Cam mentioned, there was plenty of blistering in ALL brands during a few yrs in the late 70's to early 80's IIRC due to poor resin supply, or some such thing.

Ericson, Newport, San Juan, Ranger, Cal, O'Day are a few other boats popular in teh PS region built during that 70's and 80's time frame. I have an 85 Jeanneau, there are a few of them in 30, 32 and 36' lengths floating around.

I have just bought an Islander 36 (1979 vintage) on the east coast. As probably many of them she had a blister problem. A new epoxy bottom will be done shortly. As she has been used without proper regular maintenance for the last 8 years she has many small problems but it appears to be in relatively good condition. Aside from the blisters problem you may face it is leaking windows problem. It is not complicated problem but it must be addressed as the boat interior is wood. It does not look like just sealing windows inside or outside will solve it. They have to be rebedded.
As I've found out from the papers I received she had made at least one trip to Hawaii. She has survived!!!
