I assume that the standard sailing formulae (ballast/displacement, SA, MCR, SA/displacement, etc.) don''t apply to multihulls. Is this true? Is there a separate formula system for multihulls? If not, is there a way to compare multihulls that has been generally accepted?
Most of these standardized formulas are intended to provide non-dimensional comparisons between like typed boats. Obviously comparing L/D, ballast/displacement, SA, MCR, SA/displacement,for a multi-hull to the same ratio in a monohull won''t tell you much really. Also because weight distribution and beam is so critical in Cat''s even using these ratios to compare cats is a little difficult. That said, comparing L/D, SA, and SA/displacement is helpful tool in comparing similar catamarrans. I don''t know of specialized multi-hull formulas.
