Bristol Channel Cutter
Does anyone know anything about a Bristol Channel Cutter. Does it sail well? Would it be considered a Bluewater Boat?

Yes, yes, and yes.

They are designed by the late Lyle Hess, similar to the Serrafyn (sp?) design he did for the Pardeys, and built by Samuel L. Morse company. Some were factory finished, others bought as kits and finished by owners. Morse recently closed up and sold the moulds, tooling, etc to Cape George Boatworks, a builder of similar but larger boats base on William Atkin (late) designs.

There is one at the mooring immediately adjacent to us, and it is a pleasure to behold. They are traditional, full keel boats with long sprits and cutter rigged. Very long waterline for their length, too. The standard interior is a little quirky (workshop forward where normally a v-berth is found), but those who've owned them speak highly of the layout. I wouldn't want one if sailing with a family aboard, though, too tight.

There is a brokerage in Annapolis that specializes in BCCs. You could probably learn a lot from them. I would tell you their name but I don't think that's allowed here. Hope this helps some.

Morse just went bankrupt and have stopped production as of May. is OK to post a link or referral in answer to another member's question designed to provide is self promotion and commercialism for personal gain that it not OK.

Thanks for the information John. My friend is buying a BCC. They sure are good looking. A lot of work!

Thank you for that clarification. I didn't understand the distinction, and after the anchor thread I was gun shy.

Sailing 320, The brokerage in Annapolis that really seems to deal a lot in BCCs is called Rogue Wave Yachts, and they have a fair bit of general info on their website. Might be worth a look.

LOL...John...they also have Camaraderie listed for sale! Small world.

Cam, that wasn't "self promotion and commercialism for personal gain" was it? Just kidding, but, Rogue Wave does have quite a few BCCs on the lot. I haven't meet any of the staff, but I'm sure they know a thing or two considering.

Sapper...if I was interested in self promotion for personal gain I would have given a link...but I am not that smart!! (LOL)

I have never engaged that particular brokerage for the purchase or sale of a boat, so I cannot comment one way or the other about their credibility. But I did once have a very informed conversation with one of the proprietors and he came across as highly knowledgeable, and was tremendously generous with his time and information. I have also noticed that their listings on yachtworld are far more detailed than the average (more photos and explanatory info), which indicates to me that they make a real effort on behalf of their clients to market the boats. P.S. Which interior plan does your Orion have (e.g., sit-down nav station or dinette?)

Yes, small world indeed. If it's permissable, when your transaction is complete, perhaps you would be willing to opine on the experience? Inquiring minds like to know these things... Thanks, John

I have the "C" plan, which is the dinette, interior. It doesn't have a dedicated nav station, but the dinette table handles that function just fine. I stow all the plotting tools in the bookcase behind the table.
