tartan 30 or 34c recomendations/advice

I am looking at picking up more than likely a Tartan 30 or a tartan 34c, possibly a 3000. I have foudn both the 30 and 34c within my budget. the 30 is a 78 vintage i believe and the 34 is a 72.

I am looking at this as a boat for myself to sail and take between montreal to nyc,. Most likely homeport will be in lake champlain, or nyc area. It depends on which job i take. I would liek to be sailing it down the jersey shore, aroudn nyc haror, and through the ICW.

I will probably be keeping th boat for the next 3-5 years as i get more experience sailing and eventually mvoe up to a nice cruising boat. (what my other thread was about)


I will be living aboard for a year possibly when I amek my move to a new job, but that will not be permanant.

The most important thing is that they can comfortably cruise in the ocean up to Nantucket where my family has a house. and along the jersey coast.

I personally like the 30 better than the 34 for sailing in the New York area or sailing up to New England. That said if you really plan to cruise the N.J. shore very often, rather than Long Island Sound, then you are dealing with very shallow bodies of water, which would make the 34 with its centerboard a better choice.

resale is also antoher important factor as I am looking at this as a very temporary boat so i want one that will hodl resale value as well very well.

Both are solid boats with good reputations. Either will suit your needs. With boats of that vintage, if you find one in decent condition priced fairly, just maintain the boat well and you will get your money back on resale.

Most of the 34C's that are maintained in good condition are carrying an average selling price at or even slightly above the original new sale price. I think that is a pretty good indicator of resale value! I don't know a lot about the 30, but would be happy to answer question on the 34C.

Lake Champlain is home port to a lot of 34C's which are active in the owners assoc. and would provide a great resource for information.
