What Boats to Consider

Hello,

I have been sailing for the past 6 years and have had a variety of boats. My wife and I are planning a longer voyage (about 1 year), that will include a few offshore passages. We are both immersing ourselves in as many courses as we can.

I am looking for something in the 37' - 40' range? Any ideas on what models to consider would be appreciated. I am not interested in Catalina and cheaper production boats but would consider some quality production boats if they exist (e.g. Jeanneau, Island Packet).

We would like a combination of performance and stability-safety. Looking forward to your opinions. We are aware that heavier boats with larger keels will provide greater stability but want something that is also a decent performer.

Umm.. what is your budget? where will you be sailing/cruising? Why do you think Catalina is a lower quality boat than Jeanneau??

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

I will refrain from commenting on IP and Jeauneau being a better boat...

If you want a solid performer, perhaps a J. Taswells have not ever gotten a rep as a nice performer, but I was out with one this last weekend and I was suprised at how well they do. What about an X yacht?

How much money are you going to spend? Over 500k or under? How important is the solid offshore piece?

Caliber 40? Tartans, Sabres....all have good build quality and decent performance with ability to handle coastal offshore passages or more in the case of the Caliber. Passport 40 would be another good choice.
