Need info. on Brewer's by CC Chen yard

Hi, I'm looking at a Brewer built by CC Chen (1988) and would appreciate any info. on build quality, problems, etc. They built the 40' and 45' I'm told. Any help or insights would be very much appreciated. Thanks, John

Brewer 40

Hello,

I am looking for a pilot house sailboat to live aboard in the Pacific Northwest. I took a first look at a Brewer 40 (aka Puget Pilot) that is for sale in Seattle, and it looks like an ideal boat for that purpose.

The designer (Ted Brewer) lives in the Pacific Northwest and was pretty positive about CC Chen, the builder of the 40 and also a couple other of his designs.

I noticed that its windows were cloudy on the very edges and that some of the wood surrounding the windows appears to have seen water. I couldn't tell how the deck/pilothouse was contructed (eg is it cored fiberglass, or what?).

I also noted on a survey report from 1995 on this boat that it (at that time) had "more than 100 blisters" below the waterline. I have yet to find out how (or if) this was repaired, but wonder if you have had any issues with blistering?

Thanks in advance for any advice you might have.

Hi, I'd forgotten I'd even posted this prior to buying the boat. We've done an extensive refit and I know a lot about the boat now. I've been wanting to take a look at the one for sale in Seattle to compare with ours but haven't made it down there yet. I'll PM you and give you a phone number, be glad to talk to you about it, lot's to know. We love the boat so far, haven't done any big trips with it so far, just finished the last major project (heat system) after owning the boat for almost a year (it was in pretty bad shape, unlike the one you looked at). I probably would have bought that Seattle boat if it had come on the market before we bought ours, looks nice.
