Cal 31 vs Hunter 31

We are looking at a 1981 Cal 31/SL listed at $35,900 in Anascortes,WA and a 1985 Hunter Sloop 31 listed at $37,500 in same area. Both in good shape, well maintained and equipped. Vessel to be used for coastal cruising out of Seward, AK. We intend to cruise the inland passage to Sitka AK and cross the Gulf of Alaska in June. I have helped bring three other boats across the Gulf, an Elite 32, a Catalina 30, and a Catalina 36, without an incident. A Hunter has not been high on our list, however this one appears to offer alot for the dollars and right on our budget.

Cal 31 vs Hunter 31

I like the Cal much better. Lapworth designed very fast and efficient boats. They are well made. I do not like Hunters at all, however, understand thier use. For what you are looking for, the Cal is more seaworthy, and significantly faster. (important when passage making, and more fun as well.) The 31 likes to be kept flat, as well, making it more seakindly. The 31 is almost the same boat as the Cal 34, just with a much smaller cockpit. Again, safer at sea. Does not matter much if just coastal cruising, and it is an issue if you want 5 people having drinks in the cockpit, etc. I do not know the Gulf of Alaska, but in any circumstance that would cause me to wonder about speed or safety, I would rather a Cal over a Hunter every single time. I also think that the fit and finish of a Cal are better, though the finish of Cals are not as nice as high end boats...
