Here's some specs on the boat:
http://www.columbia-yachts.com/c-24cont.html
I checked one out once that was close to free ($500), and it came with a trailer in exceptional shape. It had no engine, the sails and standing rigging were in terrible shape, there was some blistering on the hull, and the decks needed to be fully sanded down, patched, and then painted. I forgot the mention the interior was trashed.
Anyway, having just rebuilt a Cal 20, I knew that the parts alone (even mixing used and new) for the Contender would reach into the thousands of dollars. At the same time, I knew there were other boats of similair size (but better suited to sailing in the area) for a few thousand that would require a lot less work and investment.
There's a book ( Royce's Sailing Illustrated) that refers to "Pink Cloud," a SF area Contender that was used for sailing classes for many, many years and did a great job. They are sturdy boats that can hold up in a sea way. Unfortunately, I've seen others for free as well, because they seem to be moving into the area where you will never sell for close to what you put in. I think even in great shape, they go for around $2,500. (Your quick ebay resale may not go so quick.)
