Honest opinions, whats the right offer

Before I go sending my San Francisco eyes for a squiz at this one, I thought I would seek some feedback. I feel it is way too much of an asking price given its a 1979. If it is as good as he says it is, what would be a fair offer.

Oh, and I'm off to the US Embassy for my visa tomorrow.

You've been listening to these guys here in sailnet too much...the ones that prefer a 1745 Valiant to a 1998 Beneteau, because it has allure and its "chic" to like older boats...

OH groan Doc nurse dont rub them just count them.
Alex I dont intend to offer anywhere near the asking price, I agree way to high but I was thinking it is a ploy to keep the tyre kickers away.

I wouldn't count on it. I visited a 1987 Ericson 38 this weekend with a $70K asking price. The boat did have a lot of potential, but needed a lot of work to make it safe, and a lot more work to make it really nice. By the time you got the boat in bristol condition you'd have over $100k in it and its market value would probably be about $75k. I guess the owner is waiting for a sucker to come along.

Lion35 is on a distinguished road
1745 was a great year for Valiants, pre-blisters production.

I like Cal 39s. We have one in our harbor that is very well kept and makes regular trips to Mexico. IMHO the asking price is high on this particular listing. I thought these boats normally listed in the high 50s low 60s, but I'm just going off my memory (not a great thing to go off of).

In the quest for world-wide peace and harmony, write him a check for his asking amount. That way you'll feel great for being a real giver, the seller will be elated, no one's feelings will be hurt and when you post both the survey report and the insurance quote, all of us can sit here and laugh in unison.

Call it mutual orgasmic bliss for sailors everywhere...........

BUC puts the value at 42-48K in good condition. In superb condition add 10-15%...and while BUC is not comprehensive...the asking price is WAYYY high. If in great shape I'd offer 40k and go from there.

I never looked at the BUC value site before and I'm not really familar with their method of rating a boats condition. Based on your experience would you say most boats fit in the "BUC condition" description or are most of them "fair" or lower?

I know I'd be more than thrilled to get the BUC value they have listed for my boat. Anyone know how I get them to send me a check? ;-)
