Buying a Catalina 30

I am interested in buying a Catalina 30 which I will be using in the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay. Shoal draft was an initial priority however most boats on the market are Fin Keel (5''3" draft). I am interested in comments on the practicality of deep draft in the areas I plan to sail. I would also be interested in hearing of differences in sailing performance and stability in the different keel configurations.

Buying a Catalina 30

I have sailed the Catalina 30 extensively. The one I sailed had the fin keel. We had the boat out in heavy and fair weather and it always felt safe albeit a bit tender in heavy air.

The Catalina 30 is alot of boat for the money. It was very comfortable, good for entertaining and very forgiving. The rudder had some problem of osmosis which Catalina did offer upgrades for at a discount.

If you like the layout and will settle for average performance, the Catalina is really a fine boat. If you have dreams of speed, you''ll probably be shopping in a couple of years. This is a great boat for four people on a short cruise.

Insert DENR derogatory Catalina comment here.

I have cruised on the upper Chesepeake a lot. There were definetely anchorages where depth was a problem. Keels in the 5 to 6 foot range should still get you into most places. I wouldn''t think you would have much problem with the C30 fin keel.

Thanks, DENR, that is the spirit! I like that comment the best, and some useful information to boot, way to go!
