Bought New Dinghy

I just picked up a 10 year old Boatex 10 foot dinghy. It is dirty and needs a repair on the gunnel. It also came with a sailing kit that looks like it was hardly used. I paid $500, what do you think? Any comments regarding this model. It looks like my kids will have fun with the sails. Any tips for the fiberglass repair. The glass is very thin in this area.

I don't know anything about the boat, but if you want to do the glass yourself , buy this book for $4 and have all the west system knowledge you need to make the repair proper and lasting.

I think you did well. Does the Boatex 10 have a centerboard case or do you use a lee board or just hang over the high side?

It came with centreboard case and board, rudder/tiller, 2 piece mast, boom, main, jib, and oars. It needs a 2x4 hole on the gunnel filled and a good scrub. You should have seen the looks I was getting driving around Toronto with a dinghy on the roof racks in a snowstorm. The valet guys at the hotel weren't sure what to make of it. My wife already thinks I'm nuts!

You picked it up in Toronto? Wish I'd known. I've been looking for an excuse to go out for a beer for some time.

Yes, the PO and I dragged it back from Ward's Island sled style with the painter in that snowstorm wednesday evening. You could have been part of the dog team. The staff at the Harbour Castle where I dragged it to must of thought I was a real hick. The wife was mortified .

Heh...you dragged it onto the Ward's Island ferry? It would've been funny watching that from the bar at Queen City Yacht Club!

At least you picked a waterfront hotel...good luck with it!

That's exactly where I dragged it from. The snow turned out to be a blessing in disguise since I couldn't bring my vehicle across to the island. The PO was a real sport for going over in the snowstorm. I thought for sure he would cancel. If you watched the TO media you would have thought there was a national disaster. A little snow like that here in N. Ont. wouldn't make such big news!

Don't believe the media or the city officials, who are big pussies about a little snow. Real native Torontonians, especially over the age of 40, know that this is nothing, really. It's just that since 1990, we've had winters with next to no snow at all, and with frequent thaws. To have a big dump, followed by a freeze, followed by another big dump, leaving 45 cm. of snow on the ground, is getting relatively rare, and people don't remember that this happened two out of three years before winters got warmer.

Hell, the lake used to freeze for a couple of miles out. Not now...even with these temperatures, it would take a month of this to ice over the lake.

I took my time leaving town Thursday since the city was in such a mess. You guys just don't have any place to put it. The side streets were still plugged with snow at noon hour. I feel for the city trying to plow with all those cars parked in the streets. You can't do that in most snow belts so it's much easier to cope with a ton of more snow. Also nobody is dressed for it. Folks were walking around in a foot of slush with loafers on! I guess everyone is starting to get used to the new "norm" climate wise and don't really appreciate that it is still February in Canada.
