Cabo Rico Freakco

New member and having a great time! And I'm enjoying past threads, the wealth of info available and most entertaining with the banter laced with some comedy as well. Makes for a GREAT site and I appricate the effort that must go into it. Well done! Being a newbie, I would also like to sign up for a copy of the 'SailNet Acronym Handbook' and the 'Who to Watch Out 4 Unstable Member List'! Although very entertaining, one must be careful! If you have the latter in waterproof addition, would appreicate it. There are more than just boat 'issues' to be addressed out there! And thanks to all for the welcome aboard.

All seriousness aside, I recently saw a somewhat derelict Cabo Rico Tiburon which I found out later had been abandoned and repossessed for a year or more. Because of legal issues, I guess, can't get permission to board to see if the boat is worthy of further survey, but the bank or the liquidator are not ready to talk for some reason and the MAN with the keys can't be bribed.

My main concern is the boat is listing to port, not too bad, but the boot stripe is an inch under water and I saw bird footprints on the cabin sides(maybe the thick growth of black and green grunge helps with traction)! The dock guys that have been below swear the boat is totally dry (all tanks and bilge) and empty of extraneous gear.

Well, if anyone is still awake out there after that backround info, my questions are: With the boat listing as much as it is, will the hull above the boot and antifouling paint be subjected to osmosis enough to be of real concern for blistering? After searching a few sites, I found one Tiberon add that describes the walk thru as "cozy passageway".(I saw a Tiberon owner on SailNet to ask this one of, but can't find the thread again. Hope he sees this post)! I'm 6'3" and 235lbs. (and maintaining), just how cozy is this passage way and will I need lube and a large shoe horn? I was also hoping to get some reason for the listing. One dock mate reports a generator installation, somewhat to port. With the boats displacement of over 20k lbs., could a generator weigh that much to cause the listing? Are the water tanks configured as such to cause it if the port tank(?) is maybe still full? What else of the Tiberons design could cause it?

Just hoping for someone familar with the Tiberon so I can maybe get a jump on things I need the survey to concentrate on. That is if powers to be allow it. If not, I won't be buying no pig in a poke! But ooohhh, she does have beautiful lines, even for a CC. If she wasn't so filthy, I coulda and probably woulda LICKED HER! Yeah, Yeah, I got issues too! I know all this is sketchy at best, but it's all I GOT.

Fullkeel- Welcome aboard. I can't help you with the Cabo specifically, but I can tell you that the listing may be nothing to worry about. My boat carries the fuel tank to port and water to starboard. I often have to adjust the level in the water tank to off-set the fuel level on the other side. If this boat had some tankage drained and still has liquid in another tank, it could explain the problem.

Fullkeel-

Welcome to sailinet. Can't help with the cabo rico... but would recommend you read the post in my signature to get a bit of start on getting the most out of your time here on sailnet. Also, I'd highly recommend you watch out for the following members, as they're known to be somewhat unstable:

Giulietta, our resident Portagee
Camaraderie, who claims to be a sailor, but is buying an RV
Cruisingdad, who is known to have the largest solar panel array floating
Sailaway21, who is a foaming at the mouth Bushite.
TDW, our resident mascot Wombat

Welcome.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Thanks teshannon and T34C for the welcome.

I'm still digging for info and hopefully someone will be able to let me know how the tankage is set up, it may be the answer T34C. Along with the generator offset to port...who knows? With as little information I've found so far, it maybe that Cabo Rico didn't make too many Tiberons, so I probably need to cool the jets and wait for the "powers' for the go ahead to survey. The only Tiberon I've seen was listed at yachtworld, so they must be (along with any information about them) a pretty rare breed indeed.

SD, thanks for the welcome, will do on your post and will take your 'watch list' under advisement.

Bob,
I can tell from your post that you are an intelligent person.
You probably already know how the trouble makers are.
Wecome.

This thread is a year old, but I am curious to learn if fullkeel7 ever looked at the Tiburon 36. I'm the owner of one of them, and have some insight to share.

Hi gecna,

I really only got to look at it from the dock. It was an auction boat that was not available for inspection until the winning bid was accepted (very scarry buying method). The guy that bought it was a 'flipper'. He apparently had more guts than I...just couldn't justify buying a $20k pig in a poke.

My appologies to all that help me out on this one...I know I should have posted the outcome, but I was very disappointed and so I hit the 'errase' button on that one asap. She was a beautiful boat under all that grunge and so far I've never seen another Tiburon EVEN close to to the price. So, I suppose I'll never know whether I missed a deal of a lifetime or dodge a very expensive bullet.

Since then, I put a deposit on a very clean Seaward 26 in the PNW. When I went to seal the deal, I found I could't get into the forward area and close the door. Geez, that was an expensive lesson and another disappointment...planned to cruise the area for two seasons, then trailer it home to Florida.

Just yesterday I missed out on an e-bay shoal draft cruiser due to an eye-hand malfunction and REALLY bad typing skills. I'm starting to think maybe, I'm a big chicken and I'm just 'pecking about' looking for scraps or I'm not as serious as I think I am about buying a boat...I think I am...

Not to be deterred, I'm now armed with a printed copy of SD's tips on boat buying and a brand new Electrophysics CT-33 moisture meter (on MainSail's and others recommendation, thank you all very much). I do find buying boat related gizmo's to always lift my spirits in direct proportion to the cost! My wife however, is not too thrilled with my new toy... I mean tool. I now know the moisture content of just about EVERTHING in the house including exposed parts of female apendages. I KNOW she loves it, but still, I think I'll put it in the shed...there's sooo much crap out there, she'll NEVER find it!

Meanwhile, I'm STILL looking...Bob
