rusty engine mounts

looked at a 2001 38 foot boat today which was pristine in all respects, BUT the engine mounts and many other parts of the engine (Yanmar) had massive rust. The front of the engine looked cleaner, the back had more rust. the boat seems to be a little underpriced, could this be an isolated problem or a grounding/bonding issue? I have pics, just thought I'd write first.

Yes. Could be an indicator of someone who doesn't take care of their boat and just cleaned it up to sell it too. Best have it looked at before you go any further.

Good Luck

If the packing is NEVER adjusted it starts creating a saltwater fog in the engine compartment that starts rusting everything from bottom up, another indicator of less than hoped for maintenance.

If you are serious about the boat - then have a mechanic look the engine over as most surveyors will not do climbing rigging inspections nor will they go over the engine with a fine tooth comb to annotate actual engine condition and suggested repairs. Rust is a common issue - especially around the motor mounts - but it is a bit of an issue. Just how bad is the rust? is it flaking off, was there noticeable water underneath the engine indicating maybe a seawater leak..It may or may not be a big deal - get a engine mechanic to look it over.

thanks,

Thanks for the feedback, I think I need to continue to look and compare boats. I recall spending less time buying a house, but this is so much more enjoyable. Skulking around yacht yards is becoming an addiction for this city kid.
