Amel

Anyone cruised an Amel from the mid 80's.

Only thing I can tell you about Amels is that they don't look as bad on the water as they do in pictures. Saw one on Chesapeake Bay last year. They also seem to be popular in the Caribbean.

Look roomy and reputed to be very well built. Wondered if the cockpit wheel position would be unusual feel when healing over and swell.

Is more of a powerboat setup, isn't it? Doesn't seem like it would be very comfortable heeled over on the high side.

Looking for something in the 40-45 foot range for our next boat. Children committed but need more space. Also like Alubat's but $.

Don't know what the market is like Down Under, but most Amels don't come cheap either.

Personally, I think the Amels are rather ugly, if seaworthy boats.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

They have a rather odd approach to marketing, but as they are aimed to the Shannon/Moody/Swan demographic, I suppose it differentiates their offering.

I'll take ugly but seaworthy, because Force 10 doesn't care whether you've got a cabin top like a bank vault, but will make itself known if you have large expanses of saloon glass.

I have a friends who have one and they love it (45 I think). They both have been cruising for years and have taken the Amel to Mexico several times (from Santa Cruz). I've been aboard but never sailed on her. The construction is very high quality and the design is quirky but extremely well thought out for sailing and for cruising in particular. I agree the aesthetics aren't my favorite but I think they are really nice cruising boats.
