Lord Nelson
My very good friend in NYC has had a 36'' Lord Nelson (with a 5'' bowsprit) since 1985. He''s done a bit of ocean sailing with it, and thinks it''s a great passagemaker.
The main complaint he''s mentioned is the time needed to maintain the teak decking. His full keeled boat draws 5''4" so it''s not the best in large tidal fluctuations areas with rocky bottoms. Also, he has it rigged as a cutter, so its windward performance is less than that of a sloop with a finned keel.
However, passagemaking is mostly done with the wind behind you, and the double ended hull on a Lord Nelson is ideal for sailing in a following sea.
