Racer / Cruiser

I'm not in the market yet, but slowly starting to do some research. I'm looking for a 34'-40' Racer / cruiser. Capable of cruising with the family for a week, and yet fast around the buoys. I'm currentlly placing pretty well in my class, but want to finish a little closer to the front of the over all pack. Must be weatherly (cruising with kids), PHRF 100 or less, have more classic type lines (no flying wedge sled). Clearly older boats are OK, and prefered, judging by my current boat. Don't want to break the bank on this one. I'm thinking along the lines of Saber 38, J 39, NY40, etc...

Alright now, give me your picks. Personal experience, or min. second hand experience with a give boat is what I would really like to hear.

Not knowing your price range, I like your thinking on the J-Boats -- they seem to fit the bill perfectly for the type of sailing you describe. I would suggest looking at some of their 35-40 foot decimeter boats too, since they are a bit easier to sail in spinnaker class with a small or shorthanded crew.

I wouldn't have thought that the Sabre 38 rates below 100.

The NY 40 would be pretty fast and a lot of boat for the money, but a handful for family sailing, unless maybe your kids are grown.

The Saber is marginal for PHRF (100-105). Kids are small, 7&4 but really like the NY40 (I think you're the one that first mentioned it to me), lots of boat for the money, but can't find one in fresh water. (not manditory, but prefered) Money wise call it < 200K.

Forgot to mention MUST have wheel steering. That is one of my only issues with some of the J boats.

Yeah, I seem to recall we had a discussion about them. My experience with the NY40 amounts to racing against them in mixed PHRF fleets, and looking them over when hauled out. They are definitely fairly fast boats for their era, but I seem to recall they are heavily crewed for competitive racing -- a lot of meat on the rail and the foredeck. If you're serious about them, I'd ask JeffH for his thoughts.

If you don't mind the +100 rating, my vote would be for the Sabre 38 as the best all-round compromise. But I come from the perspective that all-round sailing ability and family comfort trump absolute speed. But if you don't care about either, then Catalina's the way to go.

Most of the J-Boats with the "C" designation have a wheel, as do most of the larger decimeter boats beyond the J-105.

T34C, your requirement of under 100 PHRF is going to mean a boat closer to 40 foot if you are looking at boats from the 80s or early 90s. Look at the trend in Tartan 34 footers:
34C PHRF = 177
34-2 PHRF = 135
3400 PHRF = 102

If you want to keep the budget down and also keep the older 34-36 foot boats on your list, you will have to raise your PHRF number a bit. A boat with a rating of 115-135 is still going to be considerably quicker than what you have.

I think T34C's hoping a faster boat will make up for his poor racing technique...

BTW, only sailed on Cal 40s about a dozen times... I like them though...for a lead mine.
