Two cabins, coastal cruiser, < $40k?

This is a continuation of my unintentional hijacking of the thread, "Coastal Cruiser for Me". That thread has some good information and a detailed question by the OP. But, PLEASE don't reply to my questions in that thread, return here first! Thanks.

My question is, what models exist that fit the following:

• Coastal/Near Shore cruising (local, Bahamas, Caribbean, not ocean crossing)
• Between 30' and 40', give or take a few
• <$40k
• Two cabins (ie. aft or quarter berth NOT open to the salon)

Any second cabin in the size boat you are looking for will be a joke and should be avoided like a plague. We had a Beneteau First 30E for a few years which had an aft cabin. The net of the boat layout was that it simply stunk...the aft cabin was like sleeping in a coffin. You need to have some realistic understanding of what space you get in that size boat and what can be done with it. the fact that a designer shoehorns in two cabins doesn't mean the result is a good idea, or that you'd find the layout satisfactory.

If you really want two cabins, I'd say you need to move up to the low 40's in size.

We've been bareboating in the Caribbean several times (BVI mostly, St. Maartin, and NZ). All the boats we've had have had two cabins and, although somewhat coffin-esk, were acceptable. Some, albeit closer to the 40' range. had a quarter berth with standing room at the door, a small seat, and a hanging locker. Others had at least a door and standing room and locker.

The Beneteaus, Waquiez,and even the Hunter 27' of which I speak are out of my price range. It is perhaps the case that nothing suitable exists in earlier, less expensive boats at this time.

Although the aft cabin in our Bending 361 is a bit of a challenge to get in and out of for two people, it is plenty comfy once you are in. The exception would be that the inside person has very little room above their knees. I have adjusted and sleep there routinely and preffer it over the V-berth.

For less than 40K, I would think that you are going to have to invest in some type of Fixer-upper in which case you will have to budget some of your funds for upgrades.

Most newer cruising boats over 30 feet have an enclosed aft cabin, but your $40K limit excludes those. Possible choices are: older Catalina 34, C&C 30-2, and Pearson 33-2.

Don't mean to sound to cynical, but its a 32' boat. How much privacy do you expect? You better become very good friends with anybody sailing with you. I am sure it has a door on it, but I would not "Rock the Boat" with company on board.

It looks like the v-berth is open to the salon, both in the doorway and through an opening above the settee. "Visual Privacy" is what I'm looking for. We just turn the stereo way up for the other kind
