28 foot Irwin

I am new to sailing and am looking at a 1974 28 foot Irwin, what can people tell me about this Irwin, i.e. how do they hold up over time, how do they sail. We live in the Virgin Islands and want to be able to cross to the BVIs any help would be greatly appreciated

The first boat I considered buying was a 1974 Irwin 32.5 Center Cockpit. Luckily, my surveyor was very thorough and found so many potential and existing problems that I withdrew my offer. Therefore, my first piece of advice is find a good surveyor. DO NOT use one suggested by the broker. Every boat is different and everyone is a compromise. All systems must be examined for their condition and potential failure. Look around on the internet (yachtworld.com) for comparable Irwins and other boats that size.

I will get a survey if I decide to make an offer but I do not want to pay for a survery if the boat is a piece of junk. I have sailed in with the owner and everything seems in order, but I have heard/read alot of stuff that is both good and bad about Irwins. So i thought I would see what people thought on here

the main thing you should consider with the purchase of an Irwin is the comfort of your inlaws. Keep in mind if they are comfortable on the boat they won''t be wanting to stay in your house and stuff. I know what a pain in the butt that can be.
