PHRF v.s Motion relevance

Hi
Been working on the shortlist of possible blue water cruising sailboats and trying to weight the importance of performance against sea kindly motion.
Ive been using this "Carls Sail Calculator" and PHRF ratings to narrow the field.
If you do the math a 10 sec/mile slower boat only cost just under 3 hours /1000 N.Miles.
Therefore I believe an increase in motion comfort is more important than the minimal lost time.
I don't want a comfortable boat thats a dog in light air nor do I want a fast boat thats lousy when it gets rough.
Looking at 40 -44 feet 1980-1990 aft cockpits with occasional Atlantic/Pacific mid latitude ability.
Any comments
Brian

Everyone has their own personal concept of what is "comfortable motion" versus intolerable, and I don't think you can equate PHRF ratings versus motion comfort. It should be possible to have both--the question is, how elegantly the design was done, or IF the designer was at all concerned with one or the other.

The designers I've heard quoted, even the Venerable Names, have all pretty much said they were pleasantly amazed when one of their boats happened to hit the nail on the head and come out with exceptional balance and/or comfort.

You'll find spreads of WAY MORE than 10 seconds a mile in similar sized boats, easily more than one minute per mile. And at that point, as the same Venerable Names also say, getting out of bad weather a whole day faster can mean an awful lot.

Forget the numbers, look for reviews that say "I'd never trade this boat for" or "exceptional combination of" and then try to spend time on them. If ypu've ever spent time on a boat that has exceptional balance, or comfort, you'll remember it.

$125,000-150,000 is what I hope to spend. Currently researching on passport 40, sabre 42, nordic 44, bristol 41, and peterson 44.

All good choices and fine boats playdirt... but i thought the Peterson44 & Bristol 41.1 were only CC boats and the Bristol is a centerboarder?
If an aft cockpit boat is what you really want then your list should be down to three and 2 of the three designed by Perry (like mine!) who knows something about sea comfort. I'd go with the Nordic for the extra space and waterline except for the draft. The Passport would be the best choice for East Coast and Bahamas.
The Saber is a fine boat too...but the 6'10" keel is a bit deep for lots of fine cruising waters and the ICW

Thanks for the post camaraderie.
Some Bristols come with an aft cockpit option and some are on YachtWorld and elseware that have centre boards.Would love to hear from somebody with experience with these and centre boards in general.
It appears a lot of the Sabre 42 and 452 have centre boards also.
I will likely sail in the East Coast and Bahamas initialy so draft is something that perhaps speaks against the nordic 44. Great looking boat though. I do agree the Passport 40 looks like a winner. As for the Peterson although a CC not ready to write off yet.
Thanks for comments , Brian

Brian...the Peterson is a great boat...I love CC's as you might be able to tell and if you actually consider them then also look at the Brewer 42, and the Hylas 44.
