Subjective realism
Today I had my first dose of subjective realism while shopping for a boat. Einstein is right, everything is relative.
Went today to look at a Flying Scot from the late 70's. It was listed as exceptional condition with a price to match. I didn't think the photos in the listing looked exceptional but in a 30 year old boat dull gel coat is to be expected.
Well, I think the asking price is about 10 times higher than reality. OK, maybe not that bad but close, at least 5 times. The description should have read "project boat".
The cockpit was a mosquito breeding experiment, the deck has multiple cracks, the original outboard mount was removed and the holes (into plywood stiffener) were poorly patched with some sort of black goop, the list goes on, including one of the shrouds with about 1/3 of the wire strands broken right at the lower swage.
The broker informed me that they would be happy to pass any offer on to the owners. I declined as it seems like the gulf between what the boat is worth to me and what they imagine it is worth is bigger than can be bridged.
Well, the hunt continues. Just needed to gripe somewhere.
