Help! Buying a Newport 27, looks like hull warp??

Im in the process of buying a 1986 Newport 27'. As I was inspecting it I noticed that she was sitting a little forward on the trailer. After looking closer I could see that where the hull rests on the pads there is some warping inward.

So my question is, Is this normal for a trailered boat of this size?? I've never owned a fixed keel so i'm not sure if I should worry about this...

If you look at the picture you can see it. Its not massive but I can tell it's there. if it is an issue is it difficult to fix??

Im planning on doing the title transfer early next week and really need to know from some of you pro's what I should do.

Thanks!!

In all likelihood this is due to too much weight being supported on the pads, along with the pads located away from supporting internal bulkheads.

Whether it's a serious problem or not depends on how long it's been like this (on the trailer) and whether the deflection has caused any internal fracturing of the glass.

I'm pretty sure the N27 is a single skin (ie non-cored) hull and this minor deflection may be nothing to worry about once it's off the trailer and in the water. If it returns to it's original contour when lifted or floated off the trailer, you may be fine.

Are you having this boat surveyed? You should, and the surveyor will be able to better advise you since he/she will be there to observe in person.

I think she has been on the trailer for quite a long time, but oddly, the current owner could not tell me since she never launched her.

I'm trying to find someone around Coeur D Alene, Idaho to do a survey but thats harder than it sounds

Thanks for the info!

small amounts of hull deflection is pretty common on sailboats on stands.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

If it's a flat spot or even dished in slightly it should return to it's original shape once floated. The plastic between the glass fibers has stretched a bit and this is an elastic deformation which will rebound if the hull is put into the water (the load will be spread across the entire hull; not just the loaded stand).

JMHO; if you are worried about your investment you should have a survey/seatrial. If you can put it in the water for 6 months or longer you could then re-haul the boat on a sling lift and check it again; but that's not easily done in Idaho I'm sure.
