Yachtworld Question?

So I am getting ready to put an offer in on a boat listed on yachtworld (pending survey of course). Is there any way to know when the listing was originally posted? If for example I knew a boat was for sale for 2 years it might give me a little more power during the negotiations.

If the boat is at a marina, you could ask around the marina and find out how long the boat has been listed for sale...

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Which is why I suggest asking around at the marina.

Excellent tip and one that I have used. If you travel to visit a boat (for me it's usually a Saturday) ask the neighbors. Like anything else, though, you have to interpret the results carefully. You could be asking a chum or an enemy. Questions like "Do you see this boat go out much?", "Has it been for sale long?" will yield better returns than "Is this a fast boat?" or "Does Joe Scupper know much about maintenance?"

If the boat is at a marina with a maintenance yard ask if the owner does his own work or has them do it. This can also go either way. I've been at marinas that had top-shelf yard staff and others I didn't trust as far as I could spit.

Another clue is to look at the state registration sticker. If it is a 2004 chances are the boat has been idle that long.

Soundings

I'm not sure where you're located, but a couple of years ago I found a boat I had looked at in person in a back issue of Soundings. It had been for sale for 2 years, originally at a much higher asking price. See if you can find back issues of whatever publication runs ads from your local yacht brokers.

The other thing you may try is a google search with the boat make, length, and name. Many sellers post ads on every internet "boat for sale" site they can find, and for some reason often include the boat name. Usually the posts are dated, I've found several boats I was interested in from the yachtworld listings on other sites, at widely varying prices. You may have to dig deep into the google search results to find what you're looking for.

On the Yacht World page for the boat you are interested in, click on the 'Full Specs' tab. Navigate to the very bottom and you will see a 'Last revised date'. That sometimes will indicate when the boat was added to the site. It can also indicate when the page was changed or a picture was added.

Or that date can tell you that the "recent price reduction" advertised was actually posted 6 months ago. Indicating an opportunity.

If a boat is on the market for 2 years how good of a deal can it be? Most people start high and drop the price after a month or 2. But if they dont come to a reasonable price within 3 months they are not motovated. Look into the reasons the owners are selling for an insite. Remember the market realities...cash is king.
