"new" items in boat specs

I'm getting a little pissed at the use of the word "new" in boat ads. Using the word 'new" in regard to something that is over 10 years old is BS. Lots of times the more I think about it I realize the "new" item is now older that the orginal whatever it replaced. Do brokers really think using the word "new" means we stop noting that whatever it is is really "old"?

If a dirty bottom slows you down what do you think it does to your boat

Yeah they normally give the "new" date and this is what pissed me off. I could maybe accept new being 2005, but saying new sails 1998, new engine 1995 etc is way out there. Most "new" items I see give dates where the "new" item would now be at the end of their life and given the year of the boat the new is older than the old when it last got replaced.

Say you are advertising a boat built in 1985. The diesel engine was replaced in 2002. How would you word it in a way that made clear what was replaced when in a short way (many places in mags etc charge by the word) that made sense? Another poster made it clear. You state when something was new. Unless the reader is very thick he can figure out that a diesel that was new in 2002 is no longer so. But it is still newer than the rest of the boat.

I find that if the NEW dates are REAL it gives ME a very good idea if i want to look at the boat

As my current boat is 27 years young the fact that the motor was NEW in 2005 and the sails were new in 2002 are helpfull facts

If engine was replaced in 2005, it is "3 year old engine", if sails replaced in 06 they are "2 year old sails". Nothing replaced in 1995 is "new". Many times in Yatchworld the first little write says things are new. Not until you go though the full specs that you find out that means 10 years ago.

One other tidbit you glean from "New YYYY"

This tells me that the owner was spending money on fixing or upgrading the boat at that time and over time. An ad that states new engine 2005, new main 2006, new #1 2004 tells me that this owner spent money every year on keeping this boat in top shape. It is the history of the boat's maintenance more or less.

I would rather a 20 year old boat that has had constant upgrades than a 10 year old boat with none.

Mike

new items in a boat ..being "pissed of "

if the poster write NEW in 2007 , when ever .. IT IS a correct information and establish a time line , and a good record .. IF that "piss you off" my DEAR .. then perhaps you need to adjust your "pantie"...

in any case "pissed of sailors" should not be on the water...

Just a thought

to comprehend what a specs say ..and hard for you to add the years together ..well perhaps take on basket weaveing , more simple !

Wow witch (guess that says it all,I doubt I want to be your "dear"). Seems from what and how I wrote it that there is nothing wrong with my math. I will agree that an overall trend of replacements shows someone is overall maintaining their boat. Of course still doesn't make a 10 year old engine or sail "new", just not as old. Interesting how posts become personal attacks isn't it.
