A lot of boat buying threads here are left “open ended” I thought I’d tell y’all the (hopefully) final outcome of our boat search

OK – so it took a couple of years for us to get to this point but we have finally made our minds up

(See thread http://www.sailnet.com/forums/buying...-catalina.html)

In the end we decided to go for the Catalina 400 over the Bene 423.

As of yesterday we have an accepted offer on a Catalina 400 2002. Now we just have to go through survey and sea trial (should be fun in February weather…)

The deciding factor in the end was that after careful evaluation we decided that the Catalina 400 is probably a better “cruising machine” for our needs. We plan a 1 year sabbatical starting this coming fall and the C400 will also leave an additional $30-50K change for the cruising kitty compared to similarly equipped Bene 423’s that we looked at.

I would like to thank Brian (CD), Cam, Vasco, Dan Goldberg and all others that have given me good advice in these two threads

I will keep you posted on outcome of survey and freeze trial.

Hey...thanks for the update and congrats and good luck with the rest of the process. I have mixed feelings about your decision as you will now be a member of CD's "club" and we'll never hear the end of it!!

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

Congrats Jorge! You made the right decision. As I have said many times to you now, the 400 is a much better boat than ANY Oyster, Swan, Hylas, HR, or Mason. I won't even mention its superiority over a Tayana!!!

Just FYI, it will take a while to get her to that 20 kt cruise speed we discussed. If you have any problems, remember it is not the boat, it is you.

PS You guys think I will go to hell for the lies I told the poor guy??

20 kts? Is that all? I thought you said the C400 is a fast boat that will easily outpoint any custom made Portuguese racing sled?

I'll just keep putting more BBQ's on her until she reaches her speed potential.

Just a quick update to say that the sea trial and survey went well.

The surveyor kept going from 8:00 a.m until 5:30 p.m with a seatrial for couple of hours.

A couple of items came up, nothing major, and the owner has agreed to pay for the repairs.

I am still awaiting the written survey report but it shouldn't be long before we have it.

In another week or so I will be writing a pretty large check to close the deal and once that is done I will post some pictures. (don't wan't to jinx anything by posting pre-maturely...)

Then starts the fun of outfitting (more large checks) and bringing her home.

I am starting to get a wee bit excited about this

Hey,

Congratulations! I missed this a week or two ago when you posted. Nice to hear the follow-up decision.

I'm also sorry to hear about the misleading info CD fed you. This has been a recurring problem here on Sailnet -- we're going to have to revisit the issue if it continues. At least he's scaled it back to 20 knots -- he used to claim that the "400" designation reflected an upper boat speed of 40.0 knots. It's a symptom of of his McGregor-envy complex.
