Just Starting or Actually Drive Testing Engine ??

We are looking at a boat with a Yanmar Diesel. It has been rebuilt, new pistons, rings, bearings injectors etc. and has about one hundred hours on it after rebuild.
The boat is in the hard and realistically mid april would be the 1st. chance to launch for a engine trial.
Is starting and running/shifting the engine a good enough indicator or does it actually have to be put under load to get a good indication on the condition.

You need to put it under load, run it up to temp, make sure it can hit max rated RPM etc. etc. for an appropriate engine sea trial. Usually money is put in escrow until an engine sea trial can be completed..

Have the owner suck about two ounces of oil out of the engine, and take it to a good engine analysis company, spend the bucks and let them tell you what the engine is like. Just make sure the owner hasn't changed the oil recently. (less than twenty hours).

You'll find out if the rings have seated, if there's any metal content (BAD THING) in the oil, etc. This might save you the cost of a full survey.
