local boat buying assistance experiences
My boat buying assistance list has been up for over a year now.
We're at 4 pages of members. That is a lot of good offers for help.
Thanks all for volunteering.
How about some stories??

I took advantage of 2 members, PBZEER & T34C. Both took a first look at boats for me. Both were very helpful.
T34C looked at a boat that I was very interested in. But I couldn't get the price down enough to get further involved. But it was worth it to know the boat was a good candidate before I started talking seriously to the broker.
PB looked at a boat and reported it might have soft decks. I paid a very small sum for a surveyor to do a quick looksee and confirmed PB's findings. Saved me the cost of plane fare to go there.

Thanks a bunch to both of you!

How about you?
Anybody shopping for boats??

Where is this list? And is it the kind of thing where members sign up so that if someone from another area is interested in a member's area, that member goes to preview it first to give an honest opinion on condition, etc.?

If so, I'd join that list. Always happy to help, and crawling around boats is as good a way to do it as any.

It's a sticky at the beginning of this forum Dan.

I am on the list and wiling to help if I can.

However, I, uncharacteristically, took a look at the thread the other day to see people posting for someone to check on a boat for them. I ASS-U-n-ME'd, that someone looking for help would PM a volunteer in the area the boat was located rather than rely on the volunteers to check the thread constantly to see if anyone was asking for help.

I had one request, which was canceled before I had a chance to look at the boat. I guess after some research the person decided he wanted a different model.

Still willing.

Oh, yeah, I did get one request some time ago from another Sailnetter to look at a boat in my area. As it happened, the boat belonged to a slip neighbor and I knew the boat well. I told them what I knew from being aboard and that it was a boat that was worth a look if it was the model they wanted. I think they decided on a larger boat, but don't know if they ever made the trip to look at the boat we'd talked about.

Still I'll give your thread credit for the assist. ;-)

Yes. FarCry in St. Thomas has been most helpful with lots of information on the boat buying process there along with insurance, dockage and mooring issues thru PM's. One (1) each rep point in FarCry's rep bag!;) along with my thanks!
