1997 Hunter 34 or 1987 Catalina 34

I am looking at buying a 1997 Hunter 34 or 1987 Catalina 34 to be a live aboard and would be using the boat to sail around Southern California and Baja Mexico. From a cosmetic and looks/living aboard the Hunter from first impressoin seems to be a better choice and has all the updated electronics and more storage space, however I know that from a Sailing aspect the Catalina would handle better and is a heavier boat. Any thoughts or advice between the 2 boats would be great.
