Finally bought a boat!
First want to say thanks to all the input we got on this board.
Second - We now really know that there is no perfect boat - especially when you are shopping on something of a shoe-string.
The boat we ended up with - a cheoy lee 36 foot midshipman is not perfect, but it is a very comfotable boat that will give us the means to do some cruising without having debt service that would keep us locked away in an office or studio. In the process we ended up heeding the advice of two surveyors and walking away from the boats we had - at that point - fixed our sights on. (Boats listed under 50K tend to have issues. The question became can they be fixed AND will it cost more than the boat is worth to do it?)
What we ended up with is a sturdy boat that will do the job. It will not win races it will not make going to windward easy, but it will be very comfortable and it will eventually get us there. It has shallow enough draft to make the Bahamas and Belize possible for someone who likes to have at least a foot under the keel and it has character - something that was lacking in many other boats. We did not buy it to do true blue water cruising, but knowing that it has done a fair amount and has weathered some heavy weather (yes we are paying close attention to the chainplates) gave us some confidence.
In any case - fair winds
